Stories Engine
A downloadable tool for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Stories Engine is a free, open-source editor for writing narrative games told entirely through a believable fake smartphone text messages, an Instagram-style social feed, phone calls, a photo gallery, a journal, and settings, all wrapped in one phone UI. Think found-footage fiction, epistolary storytelling, or an ARG that lives in someone's pocket.
Write your story once, branch it visually with a chapter graph, and export it as a standalone game — no coding required, no engine dependency for the player, no account, no internet connection needed to play.
What you can build with it
- A visual chapter graph with authored branches and conditions no hidden logic, every path is a flag or a check you set yourself
- 16+ timeline entry types: texts, DMs, social posts, photos, calls, choices, visual effects, background music, time skips, and more — including suspense tools like fake "typing…" indicators with no message following, and glitchy non-interactive hallucination sequences
- Authored phone gestures — tap, hold, swipe, drag, wipe a screen clean, punch in a code — as blocking beats or background interactions with their own win/lose branches
- An event system that reacts to what the player actually does — opening an app, liking a post, following a contact — not just to scripted choices
- Flags (numeric, boolean, or collection-based) driving conditions and effects anywhere in the story
- A no-code visual block builder for creating entirely new phone apps — no Vue, no JavaScript
- Multiple endings, each with its own optional end screen, tracked and revealed to the player as they're discovered
- An optional 18+ content warning screen for mature stories
- Full narrative translation support, alongside 5 built-in interface languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian)
Export and share
Export a finished story as a standalone game for Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android. Players never install Stories Engine itself — just your game. A LAN preview mode lets you test the real touch experience on your own phone while you write.
Free and open source
Stories Engine is MIT-licensed and open source — inspect it, extend it, or build your own native apps for it in code.
